Old-fashioned meat market set for demolition

Monday, Dec. 22, 1997 | 4:45 a.m.

"You won't see this for long. It will all be gone. It's getting torn down," Carson Valley Meat Co. owner Bill Mendes told the Record-Courier.

Mendes, who has owned the 5-acre slaughterhouse and meat market for 32 years, said he is sorry to see the business go.

"It makes me feel awful bad. I guess maybe it's a sign of the times or something. I don't know. I feel kind of funny about it."

Mendes said the business behind Carson Valley Middle School has been sold and the new owner wants a level piece of land abutting the new Chichester Estates Subdivision.

And he says it's a shame that leaves Fallon with the only small slaughterhouses in all of Nevada.

"You'll never get another chance to see one of these places. We do everything the old-fashioned way. We're too antique," he said.
