Mojave Desert Preserve funds given to water district

Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997 | 11:21 a.m.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District Board accepted $250,000 from the state for master planning the Mojave Desert Preserve, a site where the earliest evidence of humans in Southern Nevada was discovered.

State Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, who along with Senate Majority Leader William Raggio support the preserve, presented the funds to Board President Myrna Williams in Las Vegas this week.

The Mojave Desert Preserve will protect and manage cultural and biological resources of the Big Springs Archaeological District, listed on the national register of historic places.

The preserve also will integrate to the site environmentally sensitive design and construction through demonstration, education and research.

Park plans include a visitor's center, walking trails, hands-on exhibits and displays and an expanded Desert Demonstration Garden.

The Mojave Desert Preserve is located on 180 acres owned by the water district and includes an operational well field.

While the Mojave Desert Preserve will offer long-term land use management of historical and natural resources, the plan allows the necessary continued operation of wells, pump stations, water storage reservoirs and pipelines.
