Candace Gingrich hosts town-hall at UNLV
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997 | 11:14 a.m.
Gingrich will co-host "On the Road to Equality" with UNLV's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Alliance at 2 p.m. Saturday in the ballroom at Moyer Student Union. The meeting is free to the public.
The meeting will cover legal protection from workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation, adding sexual orientation to existing hate-crime laws, AIDS/HIV and lesbian health issues, securing equal protection for gay families and citizen involvement in the quest for gay civil rights.
Gingrich will also share her story of transformation from apathy and ignorance to awareness and advocacy.
The Human Rights Campaign notes that in 39 states, including Nevada, it is still legal to discriminate against otherwise qualified employees in hiring, promotion and firing because of their real or perceived sexual orientation. No federal laws protect Americans from workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The Human Rights Campaign is a national lesbian and gay political organization which lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and works in public education.
