SUN STAFF REPORTS
It was one of the best individual efforts efforts in many seasons. But unfortunately for Cimarron-Memorial, Emily McCarter received little help from her friends.
McCarter scored all but 21 of her team's points -- 40 in all -- but it wasn't enough, as Las Vegas hung on for a 62-61 Southern 4A girls' basketball victory Wednesday night.
Cimarron trailed by as many as 20 points but used a swarming press to get back into the contest. The game wasn't decided until Lallie Williams' basket in the closing seconds.
Williams led the Wildcats with 20 points.
In other games, Cheyenne routed Eldorado 59-35, Basic edge Bonanza 48-16, Durango downed Green Valley 59-52, Chaparral defeated Clark 67-59, Western blasted Rancho 63-32 and Chaffey, Calif., edged Bishop Gorman 54-50.
Cheyenne used its entire bench in the easy win over Eldorado. Yolanda Banks led the host Desert Shields with 12 points as Cheyenne had 10 players crack the scoring column.
At Bonanza, Jennifer Kline scored 23 points and hit a clinching free throw in overtime to lift the Basic girls to a victory. Katie Benson gave Basic the lead in overtime on a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play.
At Durango, long-range sniper Courtney McCandless hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points to spark the Trailblazers to a win over Green Valley, Danielle Boyack added 12 points for Durango while Jerenna Bosket had 14 for Green Valley.
Krystal Turner scored 25 points to led host Clark past Chaparral. Celeste Grover added 21 points for the Chargers, who led by 23 at halftime. Stephanie Tyma led Chaparral with 18 points.
At Western, Tiffany Day scored 18 points to spark the Warriors to an easy decision.
At San Bernardino, Calif., Bishop Gorman was outscored 27-15 in the second quarter en route to absording its first loss of the season in three outings.
