Museum starts Young Scientists’ Club
Monday, Dec. 1, 1997 | 11:38 a.m.
The Las Vegas Natural History Museum is introducing a Young Scientists' Club that will give kids the opportunity to learn through hands-on involvement in science experiments and crafts.
The program will be held every Saturday and Sunday, beginning Nov. 29. The young scientists will cover a new topic every weekend, beginning with bottle gardens and moving on to other topics such as bird feeders, butterflies, bubble gum, slime molds and surimi gashi art. The children will not leave empty-handed. Besides taking with them a wealth of new knowledge, many experiments include a project that the kids will finish and take home with them too.
Young scientists, 6-12, begin experimenting by purchasing a journal for $5 at the front desk in the museum, to cover the cost of the materials. The journals, used for recording new findings and information each weekend, will be good for admission into 10 sessions of the child's choice. It is not required that they come to every session, but, upon completion of 10 experiments, they will receive a certificate.
Developed to increase the level of involvement that children have at the museum, the Young Scientists' Club also gives kids a detailed approach into the concepts of science. At this time, plans are being made to offer the program at no cost to young scientists, pending the increase in program participation.
Located at 900 Las Vegas Blvd. North, the museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students, military and seniors and $2.40 for children, 4-12. Memberships are available for $35 per family, including unlimited admission for a year and a newsletter subscription. For more information on the Young Scientists' Club, call the museum at 384-DINO or visit the website at www.
