Libraries offer free access to Internet

Monday, Dec. 1, 1997 | 10:02 a.m.

Monday morning the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's 12 urban facilities will go online, providing free access to the Internet for library patrons.

Library spokeswoman Karen Bramwell said each library will have two computers designated for Internet use.

Each of the district's three Microcomputer Centers will have one Internet terminal, including the centers at Clark County Library, Las Vegas Library and Sahara West Library and Fine Arts Museum.

Bramwell said a number of rules have been created for use of the Internet:

* Users must have a library card.

* Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

* Patrons may not use their own software or change the system settings on library computers.

* No more than two users at one station.

* Printers are available. Printouts cost 20 cents per page.

* Users may save files to their own disk or buy a disk at the library for $1.

* Personal disks will be scanned for viruses before being used.

* An agreement form must be signed before the Internet may be used.

Bramwell said its Internet does not provide access to news groups or e-mail.

All users of the Internet are expected to use its resources in a responsible manner and to follow rules and regulations, Bramwell said.
