Guided hikes offered at Lake Mead
Monday, Dec. 1, 1997 | 11:37 a.m.
Reservations can be made at the visitor center in person or by calling 293-8990 starting on the Sunday two weeks prior to each hike. Hikes generally are limited to the first 25 people who sign up. No pets are allowed on hikes.
Scheduled hikes for the end of November and December are:
Nov. 29: Liberty Bell Arch -- Traverse a narrow wash through ancient river beds into Black Canyon to the vicinity of a natural arch. Bring camera and binoculars to capture the beauty of the area. Moderately strenuous, seven-mile hike.
Dec. 6: Callville Crater -- Hike through a "volcanic bomb-strewn" area to an ancient crater. Enjoy great desert vistas along the way. Moderately strenuous, four-mile hike.
Dec. 13: River Mountain Trail -- A series of switchbacks lead hikers up the River Mountains, testimony to a volcanic period in the history of Lake Mead NRA. Spectacular views of Lake Mead's Boulder Basin and the Las Vegas Valley are seen from the top of Black and Red Mountains. Moderately strenuous, six-mile hike.
Hikes will be suspended for the holidays. Guided hikes will again be offered Jan. 24-March 28.
Hikers must come prepared with required equipment including sturdy footwear and proper clothing. Long pants, hat and sunglasses are suggested for protection from cactus and sun. Hikers must bring their own lunch and water.
Additional information on hikes and other activities at Lake Mead NRA can be obtained by contacting the staff at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, four miles northeast or calling 293-8990 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.
