Schools to square off for fund-raising

Event organizer and Vons store manager Larry Kirchmann anticipates the fund-raiser will raise more than $100,000. All funds raised through the event go back to the schools. "The school groups participating in the event decide where they want the money raised to go -- they may want new equipment for their band or to subsidize a school event," said Kirchmann. "This is an excellent opportunity for members of the community to have interaction with the schools and support the efforts of the students."
Funds are being raised in several ways: Vons customers may purchase a megaphone donation card for $1 at any checkout stand; a car wash and sponge toss on the day of the event and $1 raffle tickets with a grand prize of a trip for a family of four to the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla. Other raffle prizes include a shopping spree at the Galleria at Sunset and health club memberships.
Participating schools are Basic, Bishop Gorman, Bonanza, Boulder City, Chaparral, Cimarron, Clark, Green Valley, Las Vegas Academy, Las Vegas High, Rancho, Silverado, Valley and Wester.
Battle of the High Schools sponsors include Vons, Southwest Airlines, Pepsi, Terrible Herbst, Kellog's, Bank of America, Kraft Foods, Sparkletts, Frito-Lay, Ocean Spray, Valley Foods, Galleria at Sunset, Keebler/Sunshine, Anderson Dairy, 360 Cellular, 24 Hour Fitness and Fountains Plus.
