Letter: Students are listening, that’s why they use improper grammar
Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997 | 9:56 a.m.
It's sad to say, but they ARE listening. They're listening to their parents, their friends and all too often to their teachers. And what they're hearing is "I seen" instead of "I saw" or "I've seen," "pitcher" instead of "picture," "wif" or "witch" instead of "with," "libary" in place of "library," "korter" replacing "quarter," and so many other mispronounced words and grammatical mistakes there aren't (or is it ain't?) enough words allotted in this column to list them all.
Are students listening? You bet they are, and they learn by example, passing on what they've learned to the next generation. It's extremely pathetic that adults, many of whom are college graduates, can't speak proper English.
