VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Kerry Taylor gave up only three hits in seven innings, but they all came in Vancouver's four-run fifth inning as the Canadians handed the Las Vegas Stars a 5-2 defeat Monday night.
Taylor (6-9) took a no-hitter and a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning, but the Canadians scored four runs on a double, two singles, two errors and a hit batter. Frank Bolick's two-run single snapped a 2-2 tie and the fourth run of the inning scored on a throwing error by catcher Eric Helfand.
Taylor allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits, walked six and struck out four in seven innings.
The Stars scored both their runs in the first inning against Vancouver starter Mike Bovee (4-3). Stoney Briggs led off the game with a single and scored on Trey Beamon's double to left. Derek G. Lee followed one out later with a run-scoring double.
Vancouver got a run back in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. Taylor walked two batters and, with two outs and runners at second and third, uncorked a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.
Prior to the game, the San Diego Padres optioned outfielder Ruben Rivera to the Stars. Rivera is expected to join the Stars in Las Vegas on Friday.
