Letter: No one would understand Ebonics in Africa either

Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997 | 3:29 a.m.

If anyone could explain how an often-used phrase like "I'm hangin' wiff my homies" has even one word taken literally from Swahili or any other native African language, then perhaps Ebonics wouldn't be so absurd. To continue to suggest that it actually be taught in schools is ludicrous.

Ebonics is no more African than it is English. Try speaking Ebonics in America, and no one will understand you. Speak it in Africa and no one will understand you either. I rest my case.
