In 1997, the Wildcats believe they have the right combination to take the next step.
"Our goal is to win the Sunrise," Las Vegas coach Kris Cinkovich said. "We've taken second the past two years in a row and that hasn't sat too well around here. Hopefully, we can get over the hump."
The Wildcats return 11 starters and 21 lettermen from last year's team that went 6-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Bonanza. In addition, Las Vegas will have a strong core of players from a junior varsity team that was co-champion of the Sunrise Division.
The squad went to the Utah State football camp over the summer, which helped it grow as a unit on and off the field.
"We think we'll be pretty good," Cinkovich said. "We had a good off-season and good year in the weight room."
Key returnees for the Wildcats are senior tailback Jermaine Lewis (5-8, 165), cornerback Kenny Craig (6-1, 170), tight end Brent Taylor (5-10, 180) and defensive lineman Tim Fout (6-0, 225).
Offensively, Las Vegas will go to an air attack and throw the ball about 20 times per game. Senior quarterback Eddy Gifford will play a big role.
"Eddy has been in our program for three years. He is a great competitor and leader," Cinkovich said.
On defense, Las Vegas wants to put more pressure on the quarterback with its strong front seven.
"We are looking forward to the season," Cinkovich said. "The kids have worked real hard and they are ready to cash in."
Las Vegas is now part of the Northeast Conference of the Sunrise Division, along with Rancho, Valley and Eldorado.
