Letter: Common courtesy goes long way in a doctor’s office

Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997 | 11:01 a.m.

Some time ago, I had to pay several visits to different medical facilities prior to major surgery. I was always ahead of time for my appointments. Not once was I seen by the doctor on time. I waited as long as an hour. When I approached the desk to ask in a polite fashion "How much longer?" I was told in a less-than-polite tone, "The doctor's busy."

In one office, when making an appointment for a future visit, I was told, in a voice loud enough for all to hear, "And if you're late, you will be penalized!"

This same office recently moved to the opposite end of town from where I live. I was not notified. In an attempt to search for a doctor near my home (I no longer drive), I contacted my health organization for a list of primary doctors. That was two weeks ago; I still do not have a list.

Unlike some patients that J. Mardi describes, I don't want your magazines, plants, rolls of tissues and towels. I just want common courtesy.
