Video link to Las Vegas planned for Legislature

Friday, Aug. 15, 1997 | 9:35 a.m.

"The goal is to get more access to Las Vegas," said Ron Nichols, manager of information systems for the Legislature. "Las Vegas is where a majority of the state's population is, but right now for people up here it's like they're out of sight, out of mind."

Lorne Malkiewich, Legislative Counsel Bureau director, said the new link, to be sent through broadcast lines similar to phone lines, will provide broadcast quality reception.

"It's better than a video-conferencing setup," he said, adding the long-term goal is to have cameras in each committee hearing and floor session of the Legislature.

"This ... is called the Nevada C-Span bill because we'd be trying to provide the same type of service C-Span does," he said.

"The reason we want broadcast quality is so that television stations can pick it up," Nichols explained. "We'll provide the signal to (Las Vegas). Stations could either pick it up live or record it for broadcast on the five o'clock news."
