Letter: Fremont St. contract change didn’t make good sense

Friday, Aug. 15, 1997 | 11:29 a.m.

Recently the mayor and casinos attempted to change the Fremont Street Experience Liability Corp. contract between themselves, so that the taxpayers, instead of the casinos, would be held liable for the costs and legal fees associated with the eminent domain taking of downtown properties.

They said they needed this contractual change so that it would be easier for the city to settle with the property owners. After intense public pressure mounted, they scuttled their scheme.

Two days later, they somehow miraculously settled with two property owners. Obviously, they were not telling the truth. As I wonder out loud, I find myself asking: Just what was their real agenda?
