CALGARY, Alberta -- It had been more than two weeks since Mike Maddux had faced live hitting and it showed Thursday night as the 35-year-old right-hander was roughed up by the Calgary Cannons in his Las Vegas Stars debut.
Maddux, signed by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday after being released by the Seattle Mariners, gave up six runs on nine hits, walked six (one intentionally) and struck out five in the Stars' 8-2 loss to the Cannons.
Maddux took the loss in the game that was halted for 32 minutes because of rain. The Las Vegas native seemed to pitch better following the delay as he allowed only one run on one hit and struck out three after the interruption.
The Cannons got to Maddux for three runs on four hits in the first inning and added two more in the second as Maddux issued two bases-loaded walks. In the fourth, Maddux gave up a one-out triple to Brandon Cromer and a sacrifice fly to Tim Marx.
Calgary added two runs in the ninth on back-to-back home runs by Manny Martinez and Cromer off Marc Kroon.
The Stars scored their runs on RBI singles by Jorge Velandia in the fourth and Dave Hajek in the fifth.
Stars first baseman Derrek L. Lee extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an infield single in the fourth.
Ryan Hancock, obtained by the Padres from the Anaheim Angels' organization in the Rickey Henderson trade, also made his Stars debut Thursday and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
