UNLV to honor football founder
Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 | 9:42 a.m.
The Rebel Football Foundation will honor Bill Ireland, the man who founded UNLV football, with a banquet Sept. 19. The event, titled "A Tribute to Coach Ireland," will take place in the MGM Grand Ballroom at 7 p.m., the night before the Rebels' home opener against Hawaii. Ireland initiated UNLV's football program a year before becoming its first head coach in 1968. He led the Rebels for five years, compiling a 26-23-1 record and four winning seasons. He then took over as UNLV's athletic director from 1973-80. Tickets are $50 per person or $500 per table and include admission to the Hawaii game. Proceeds will be given to the Rebel Football Foundation. For more information, call 895-3454.
