Teachers, board member at odds over dress code

The school board's policy committee will review a dress code that would ban revealing or provocative shirts, torn jeans, skirts with hems more than four inches above the knee, facial jewelry, and thongs or slippers.
Trustee Shirley Barber tried to introduce the code in a memo to teachers and administrators, saying if it wasn't followed, she would lobby the board to make it official policy.
The Clark County Classroom Teachers Association challenged the school board's right to dictate dress codes, saying that's an issue that must be negotiated.
Edward Goldman, assistant superintendent responsible for labor negotiations, disagreed. He said state law does not include dress codes among issues that must be bargained.
