Letter: Johnny Tocco was a true champion, treasured friend

Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 | 9:44 a.m.

In July 1966, I walked into Johnny's Bar and Gym at Main and Charleston, meeting a fascinating man who became my oldest friend in Las Vegas. The rest, as they say, is history. The last time I talked with Johnny, he said, "Keep punching, kid, never give up." Johnny, I will treasure the times I spent with you; we both loved boxing, and it was you who was the true champion.

Finally, thank you for all the young men you've helped out of a tough spot. The pictures on your gym's walls are a testimony to your kindness. Godspeed and so long to a class act. I am so honored to have shared your earthly journey. Goodbye, my friend.
