Las Vegas Stars scorecard
Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 | 9:33 a.m.
The San Diego Padres have offered Las Vegas resident Mike Maddux a contract, but Stars manager Jerry Royster had not heard as of late Monday night whether the 35-year-old right-hander accepted the contract. Maddux, a veteran of 11 major-league seasons with seven different teams, was recently released by the Seattle Mariners and has been working out at Cashman Field to stay in shape. "I'm hoping he signs, but I haven't heard back from him," Royster said following the Stars' doubleheader sweep of Vancouver. "He has been offered a split contract but he's going to have to start with us and get back into shape. He'll be here (and) he'll have to pitch his way back to the major leagues." If Maddux signs with San Diego, it will be his second tour with the Padres; Maddux was 9-4 with 10 saves in 1991-92. ... Stars left-hander Heath Murray went the distance (seven innings) in the second game of Monday's doubleheader and it marked only the fourth complete game for a Stars pitcher this season. Kerry Taylor (2) and Paul Menhart had the others. ... First baseman Derrek L. Lee was 2-for-2 in the first game and 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap and now has hit safely in 14 consecutive games. ... Center fielder Doug Dascenzo had his foot placed in a cast after reinjuring a heel injury Sunday and will be out of the lineup for at least a week, Royster said. ... Bob Scanlan, who started Monday's first game and pitched five scoreless innings for the win, became the 17th pitcher to start a game for Las Vegas this season. ... Outfielder Ruben Rivera will return to San Diego today, have his shoulder re-evaluated by Padres team doctors and work out with the Padres for four days, then rejoin the Stars Saturday in Edmonton. Rivera, who completed a rehabilitation assignment with the Stars last week, is on the Padres' disabled list but likely will begin another rehab stint as soon as he is cleared by doctors, Royster said. ... Outfielder Derek G. Lee was ejected from Monday's second game in the second inning after first arguing with first-base umpire Andy Fletcher over a close play at first base in which he was thrown out on a ground ball to third, then arguing with home-plate umpire Mike DiMuro about an earlier called third strike.
Upcoming games
The Stars begin an eight-game road trip tonight with a 6:05 contest at Calgary. After four games with the Cannons, the Stars will play a four-game series at Edmonton.
