Former UNR medical school staffer sentenced for embezzling $61,433

Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 | 4:23 a.m.

Toni Marie Kozlowski, 33, also was ordered by Washoe District Judge Pete Breen to undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment.

If Kozlowski violates terms of her probation, she could face up to eight years in prison.

The embezzlement, investigated and prosecuted by Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa's office, started in January 1995 and continued until September 1996 while Kozlowski was working as a personnel technician.

Investigators said Kozlowski was responsible for the medical school's life insurance and disability insurance account and raided that account by issuing 42 checks and using the money for gambling.

Kozlowski, who pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement, forged signatures on the checks, ran them through her personal bank account and then destroyed them when they came back to the university with monthly bank statements.
