Letter: Governor’s pool bill veto was irresponsible, selfish

Friday, Aug. 1, 1997 | 2:29 a.m.

His reason for the veto was totally inaccurate and misleading. It certainly would have reduced the number of pool and spa contractors (109 as of July 17), but if they are financially irresponsible, they should be reduced.

Legitimate pool contractors should not be allowed to use our customers' money to finance our businesses. The absurd reason of having "onerous financial demands" placed on us is nothing more than a smokescreen on behalf of some of the industry members, allowing them to collect up to 95 percent of a pool's price after completing just 30 percent of the work.

The governor completely ignored the financial risk to the consumer with his selfish and irresponsible act one day before this bill should have become law. It makes one wonder what the real motives behind this veto were. I wonder if AB512 would have suffered the same fate if Mr. Miller was up for re-election.

How many more millions of dollars must the consumers of this state lose? Unfortunately, we now must wait two years for the Legislature to override the veto of this unconscionable act.

Consumers of the state of Nevada, get smart. Demand protection from your government now, before it's too late.
