Letter: Charging for waiting time in traffic is wrong

Friday, Aug. 1, 1997 | 2:26 a.m.

While we waited, I glanced at the meter and saw that it was changing regularly. I asked the driver and he told me that after a certain number of seconds the meter automatically changes to waiting time and the meter continues to run. Waiting time has always meant time spent by the driver waiting for the passenger to return. Apparently, this is no longer the case.

The cab was labeled Henderson Cab No. 977 and the driver said no one had ever noticed before. Well, I noticed and it made me very angry.

How many unsuspecting tourists have been treated in this fashion? How many people without cars haven't noticed that their fare was raised in this underhanded way? What about the disabled, the blind and people who are ill or have small children? Besides being shameless and dishonest, this is detrimental to our tourist business.

Just because people come to Las Vegas to gamble doesn't mean they appreciate being fleeced.
