Two injured in park shooting
Monday, April 21, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
A weekend shooting incident at City View Park in North Las Vegas disrupted family get-togethers and sent two people to the hospital.
About 200 people were in the park when the shooting began at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, police said. Someone began firing into the air from a crowd of mostly young people, witnesses said.
Park-goers scattered, leaving police to put the pieces together.
Juan Lopez, 36, was shot in the head. He taken to University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition today.
A 17-year-old black male was shot in the jaw. He in stable condition at Valley Hospital Medical Center, where his friends drove him after the shooting.
Witnesses told police that two black men about 19 years old wearing dark clothing began firing handguns into the crowd in the upper level of the park at Cheyenne Avenue and Fifth Street. The gunmen were last seen running southbound out of the park, and may have left the area in a red compact car.
Police said they did not know what caused the shooting, in part because witnesses were uncooperative.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 633-9111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
