People in the news for April 21, 1997

Monday, April 21, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

We here at People in the News want to send belated wedding wishes to Las Vegas' royal couple, Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields, who finally tied the knot over the weekend in Monterey, Calif. The bride and groom, who reportedly were introduced at a tennis match in '93, exchanged vows before Rev. Charles Gard, a longtime Shields family friend, and about 100 guests in a small ceremony, during which the San Francisco Boys Choir performed. In true Hollywood form, four paparazzi-filled helicopters hovered overhead. The 31-year-old bride, star of NBC's "Suddenly Susan," wore a white gown with a five-foot train. No word on the 26-year-old tennis star groom's duds, though a Nike swoosh was undoubtedly affixed on him somewhere. A reception followed at the upscale Stonepine Resort in Carmel Valley.

Also making matrimony news ... Batman's sidekick has a new partner -- a wife. Chris O'Donnell, who stars as the caped crusader's cohort in the upcoming film "Batman and Robin," married longtime girlfriend, Caroline Fentress, in Washington state on Saturday. The newlyweds were introduced by the bride's brother who attended Boston College with O'Donnell.

Snoozefest

Was Marcia Clark guilty of being boring? At least 75 people who paid $35 to attend a speech by the O.J. Simpson criminal trial prosecutor last week said they wanted to hear details about the case, not self-esteem tips. Now organizers of the Portsmouth, Va., event are offering refunds, "because it just didn't live up to everyone's expectations," said promoter Sandy Craig. "This was as big a surprise to us as it was to the people in the audience." Instead of spouting her opinions of the Simpson case, members of the 900-person audience said Clark criticized gender stereotyping, telling women, "You can do it ... we gotta be our own best friends."

Babbling beauty

Look out, Oprah: Cindy Crawford is taking over the TV talk show game. The supermodel has already filled in for Kathie Lee Gifford on "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee," and is being considered as a substitute for CNN's "Larry King Live." "I'm totally intimidated," Crawford said of her newfound career, "but I don't want to not do things because I'm afraid of failing." Except prod "Tonight" show host Jay Leno about why he and his wife Mavis are childless. Crawford will interview him next month while filling in on NBC's "Later." She told TV Guide, "It's really none of my business."
