* HOUSE FIRE -- Fire investigators have determined that an unattended pot on a stove started a fire in West Las Vegas that destroyed a kitchen. An elderly resident had gone outside and forgot about the food when next-door neighbors noticed smoke pouring out of the kitchen and dialed 911 about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, said Tim Szymanski, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman. Flames were coming out of the windows when firefighters arrived at the single-story house in the 1100 block of Wyatt Avenue, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Owens Avenue. Investigators estimated the damage at $40,000. The elderly resident, who was escorted to safety by his neighbors, will be staying with relatives until his home is repaired.
