MBE awards

Doug and Holly Beckley, owners of Mail Boxes Etc. at 1350 E. Flamingo Road, were recognized as the No. 1 MBE franchise in the nation for 1995 and 1996 in business services at the firm's recent convention at the MGM Grand.

In addition, the Beckleys were named to the Top 25 Club of 1996 for total revenues.

Eddie and Susan Alvarez, owners of Mail Boxes Etc. at 6170 W. Lake Mead Blvd., won the 1996 award for being the No. 1-ranked franchise in communications services.

Albert and Michelle Page, owners of Mail Boxes Etc. at 2251 N. Rampart Blvd., won awards for 1995 and 1996 for being in the Top 200 Club of revenue producers.

Hospitality honors

Darrell Luery, president and chief operating officer of Bally's hotel-casino in Las Vegas, has been presented the Five Star Diamond Award of the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences for his leadership of the resort.

Bally's received additional awards for excellence in service, hospitality, ambiance and cleanliness.

Five Star Diamond ribbons were also presented to executive chefs Werner Zefferer and Erie Scuiller; chef de cuisine Todd Clore; executive pastry chef manger Dan Molchan; sous chefs Wayne Gillis, David Garcia, Mark Work and Thierry Connault; pantry chefs George Sinia and Bong Kang; chef specialty room-pantry Chanh Boupha; and chef assistant garde Cue Mullins.

Medical center

Construction has begun on Phase I of the Hartwell Medical Center, a 26,200-square-foot outreach facility for St. Rose Dominican Hospital, at 1776 E. Warm Springs Road on land donated by Nina Hartwell.

DASCO Development West Inc. is developing the facility for SRH I Investors Ltd. of Florida. The two-story wood and stucco building has a contract value of $1.5 million.

The architect on the project was J. Brent Thompson of Little Rock, Ark., in association with Cromwell Architects and Engineers. The project manager for Nielsen Dillingham Builders is Dennis Heine and Mike Casey is project superintendent.

The project is scheduled for completion in October.

SBA awards

Tim Wong, president of Arcata Associates in North Las Vegas has been named Nevada Small Business Person of the Year for 1997 by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Wong and the following small business award winners will be honored at the annual SBA Small Business Awards luncheon at Palace Station on June 11.

James Petty, president of Air Vegas Airlines was named Small Business Person for the City of Las Vegas; Delmar Wilson, owner of Rainbow Rock of Las Vegas Inc., was recognized as Small Business Person for the City of North Las Vegas; and Ronald Lee, owner of Ron Lee's House of Clowns, was given the honor for Henderson.

Other award winners were: Laurie Kalnin, vice president of Imperial Bank, Financial Services Advocate of the Year; Dianne Fontes, executive director of the Nevada Purchasing Council, Minority Small Business Advocate of the Year for the State of Nevada and Region IX; Janice Barbour, founder of Nevada Self-Employment Trust, Women in Business Advocate of the Year;

Carole Bellmyre, publisher, Distinguished Publishing Co., Small Business Media Advocate of the Year; Rea Melanson, president of Melanson & Murray CPAs, Small Business Accountant Advocate of the Year for the State of Nevada; Todd D. Coons, president of SpecPro, Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the State of Nevada; and Bill Dayton, president of Encore Productions, Entrepreneurial Success Award for the State of Nevada and Region IX.
