Councilman withdraws opposition to sales tax increase

Eveleth proposed a letter stating that the one-cent sales tax increase to fund a new Elko General Hospital wouldn't be beneficial to the county as a whole, since Wendover and Jackpot residents rarely use the hospital.
He added that along with a half-cent sales tax for a regional landfill, the hospital sales tax would amount to a gigantic increase that would be detrimental to the mining and tourism industries.
Eveleth said the sales tax proposal sailed through the state Legislature too quickly to allow any response, the Elko Daily Free Press reported.
Wendover City Councilman Howard Copelan was the sole member to openly support the sales tax. Other council members endorsed Eveleth's idea, but thought his first letter needed some changes.
