Letter: Government should not interfere with our beliefs

Thursday, April 17, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Kudos to Adesuwa for refusing to subject her 10-year-old daughter to the female genital mutilation she underwent at age 2. It took a lot of guts to do that, not respecting a traditional rite of passage into womanhood. But, senators, it is none of your business to try to outlaw the practice. It is only the business of the mothers and fathers whether they want to act traditionally or not.

Just as it is with parents who do or do not want their sons circumcised. That is their business only.

Maybe you senators feel the FGM practice is not acceptable to you, but you can't force your beliefs on others.
