John McCarron: Schwerdtfeger walks off with Terrible’s Town win

Thursday, April 17, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

TIM SCHWERDTFEGER moved from a slow crawl to a high-flying finish as he topped a field of 25 bowlers in the Storm WildDOG Sweepstakes Sunday at Terrible's Town. He earned more than $700 in cash and merchandise as he won two sweepers, two side pots and a four-game block.

His 1755 8-game total was 53 pins better than Rick Benard ($470, 1702 pins) who took two sweepers, a side pot and most of the Terrible's Skins Game money.

Rob Edwards, 1672, once again showed he likes this event as he grabbed two sweepers and two side pots for a $360 payday.

The 1996 LPBT Bowler of the Year Wendy Macpherson, 1659, had some fun and won some cash as she took a sweeper and a side pot for $290.

PBA tour champion Joe Salvemini, 1692, parlayed second-place sweeper and Skins money into a $180 check while David Haynes, 1670, used two second-place sweeper finishes and a high four-game block to pick up $180 in cash and merchandise.

Brad Newhouse broke through to take one sweeper for $150.

Just seven bowlers topped the 200 mark while the field averaged 186 as Terrible's manager Steve Beckman put out a demanding shot for some of the area's top bowlers. But as usual, the cream rose to the top as the frequent physical and equipment adjustments of the high finishers paid off as conditions changed.

Seven of the 25 bowlers cashed for at least their entry money back and 15 players won some money for their sweeper and side pot placements.
