Where You Stand for April 11, 1997

I'm calling after reading your article on the water district and wanting to raise rates again. I honestly feel as a homeowner, the homeowners are being penalized for the water that they use. Instead of penalizing the homeowner, perhaps the city should put a ban on people wanting to build lakes in Las Vegas. Of course, we do live in the desert and how many lakes do you actually see in the desert? I'm tired of having to overpay for the water I use and every time I step into the shower I must ask myself, is this really necessary?

For the people in Sun City regarding the beltway, if you don't like what's going on, leave. I'll even come help you pack your bags. I am tired of everybody giving their opinion of what is good and what is bad for Las Vegas and they haven't lived here as long as I have.

I'm calling about homeowners associations. I'm disgusted with their Gestapo-type treatment of people. And they want their neighbors to be spies on their neighbors. I feel that as long as people keep their yards neat and their houses looking neat, fine. Don't be making them do stuff that they can't afford to do. I'm just very disgusted with them.

Does money buy happiness? I think not. I work at a gated community where the houses go for from $165,000 to $300,000. I see people drive in every day in Lexuses and Mercedes and they're miserable. Why are they miserable? They have every material thing they could have: nice houses and a new car. I see taxi drivers from foreign countries. They're smiling, they're happy just to have a job. It's not a cultural thing, it's an American thing. We're all spoiled rotten. We've been coddled too long. Third World or Eastern European people, they're glad just to be here to have an opportunity. Americans can't get enough. They have to take drugs, alcohol, buy new houses and cars and they're still not happy. Better start reading the good book again, because nobody's learned anything.

I noticed a comment in the paper concerning the Animal Foundation. I had a similar situation a week ago. I was at a construction site and found a cat whose leg had been torn off. I called Animal Foundation and I took the cat over and they said they would care for the cat. I called the next day to see how the cat was doing and the lady there was very rude and said I had signed a paper saying they had discretion to take care of the cat and I found that they had killed the cat. This Animal foundation is cold-hearted and they should have nothing to do with animals.
