CARSON CITY -- Former Gov. Mike O'Callaghan was honored as the Veteran of the Year by the Vietnam Veterans of America 338 Carson Area chapter.
About 235 people attended the dinner Saturday, including Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., who introduced O'Callaghan, who spoke about his military experiences.
Others who attended were Secretary of State Dean Heller; state Sens. Ernie Adler, D-Carson City; Joe Neal, D-Las Vegas; and Lawrence Jacobsen, R-Minden; and Assemblyman Mark Manendo, D-Las Vegas.
O'Callaghan was cited for his past and present work for veterans. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building a veterans home in Las Vegas.
O'Callaghan, now Las Vegas SUN executive editor, served in the Marines and the Army and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star after being wounded in Korea.
