Pesky told to stay out of Red Sox’s dugout

Monday, April 7, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

"It hurts me quite a bit to be honest with you," Pesky told the Boston Globe for a story in today's editions.

"I don't have much time left, and I was hoping they'd let me stay in the dugout. I think some of the players like having me around there."

Pesky, 77, who sat next to former Red Sox manager Kevin Kennedy the last two seasons, broke in with the team in 1942, and has served as a player, manager, coach, broadcaster and salesman.

It was not known who told Pesky he was not welcome in the dugout this season, but he said he got the word from general manager Dan Duquette.

"It was Duquette that told me. He told me in a conference call before spring training," Pesky said. "He said it's OK for me to hit my fungoes, but then he wants me to get dressed and go upstairs to the press room."

Pesky said he was scheduled to meet today with Duquette and Red Sox executives John Buckley and Dick Bresciani.
