Denton WAC Player of Week

Monday, Sept. 30, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

By Steve Carp

UNLV quarterback Jon Denton's record-setting performance against Wyoming earned him WAC Player of the Week honors today.

The redshirt freshman from Green Valley was selected as the Pacific Division's Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 486 yards and three touchdowns in a 33-21 loss to the Cowboys Saturday. Denton is the first UNLV player to be accorded a conference honor this season.

Denton set two school marks in the game for most passing yards (486) and most completions (32).

Coach Jeff Horton was happy for his young quarterback.

"That's awesome," Horton said. "He's worked hard and it's a very deserving honor. Each week, he's making so much progress. He's getting more comfortable with things as we keep adding to our offense. He's turning into a team leader at such a young age, which is remarkable."
