Pre-teen Nevadans compete for scholarships

The prizes included $5,000 in educational bonds and an opportunity to qualify for competition in the 1997 Pre-Teen America National Competition in Knoxville, Tenn.
The participants were evaluated in seven divisions: academic achievement, volunteer service to church and community, school honors and activities, development of personal skills and abilities, general knowledge, communicative ability and onstage expressiveness and overall pre-teen image.
The following are local winners:
Senior Division Winner: Dedree Peplowski, 12, Boulder City.
Junior Division Winner: Darbi Gardner, 9, North Las Vegas.
First Runner-Up: Rachel Davis, 9, Las Vegas.
Fourth Runner-Up: Malory Holden, 10, Las Vegas.
