* SILENT AUCTION -- Ann-Margret and her husband, Roger Smith, will host the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's "Profiles in Courage" silent auction and dinner on Sept. 28 at the Las Vegas Hilton. The silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m. Actor Henry Polic will serve as master of ceremonies for the dinner, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $150. * RAVE FOR AFAN -- "The Rave Party at the Room" to benefit Aid for AIDS of Nevada will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Epicenter. Admission is $10. AFAN is dedicated to providing education and support to individuals affected by HIV and AIDS. "The Room," coordinated by local choreographer Jayme Gies of Kristine and the Sting at the Las Vegas Hilton, will bring together many surprise appearances by Strip performers. Throughout the evening, local vendors will offer massages, haircuts, manicures, fortune readings and various luxury services. There also will be dancing and live music. * WESTERN HOEDOWN -- Opportunity Village Association for Adults With Mental Retardation will present the fourth annual "Miss Kitty's Jeans to Jewels" western hoedown the evening of Oct. 5 at the JW Ranch. * THUNDER AT YOUR TABLE -- Las Vegas Thunder and Clark County Public Education Foundation's third annual "Thunder at Your Table" benefit dinner will be 7 p.m. Oct. 2, at the Palace Station Roundhouse Ballroom. The event will benefit the Goals for Kids program and raise money for public school children. Tickets are $1,500 for a table of 10 with the Thunder player of your choice seated at your table, $150 with a Thunder player seated at your table or $75. * HIGH TEA FUND-RAISER -- Friends of St. Jude's Ranch for Children will sponsor a "High Tea" at 1 p.m. Oct. 5, at the Treasure Island hotel-casino ballroom, 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The cost will be $30 per person. For details, call 564-7288 before Sept. 25. The proceeds from the "High Tea" will benefit and support the work of St. Jude's Ranch in Boulder City. The ranch provides a home for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned.

* HARLEYS HELP HOMELESS -- More than 500 Harley riders are expected to ride to Whiskey Pete's hotel-casino on Sept. 27 in a show of support for the homeless. This third annual "HomeAid Run -- Bikers for the Homeless" will include the ride to Whiskey Pete's from various Southern California locations, a bike show at Whiskey Pete's, a scenic poker run around Las Vegas, a barbecue and an awards party. * DINNER FOR ALZHEIMER'S -- Lifesavers Alzheimer's care homes and the North Las Vegas Elks will host a spaghetti dinner and show to benefit the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association on Sept. 29. The event, which will be at the Elks clubhouse at 2939 VinDerMeer, begins with dinner at 5 p.m. At 8, a show directed by Bobby Jean Denny will excite and delight everyone in attendance. * HELP FOR ST. JUDE'S -- The Riviera hotel-casino and Wendy's of Las Vegas have joined forces to assist the works of St. Jude Children's Hospital. Every time a person makes a purchase at a participating Wendy's outlet, he will receive a coupon for a $3 discount off the regular ticket price for the Riv's "An Evening at La Cage," "Splash II" or the Comedy Club. In addition, the Riviera will make a donation to the St. Jude Children's Hospital for every show discount coupon redeemed at the Riviera box office.

* OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE GRANT -- The Western Regional Office of the Fannie Mae Foundation in Pasadena, Calif., has awarded a $7,500 grant to Opportunity Village, which has served the mentally challenged of Southern Nevada since 1954. It was the recipient of the grant based on its dedication to serving the disabled.

* COMPUTER EQUIPMENT DONATED -- Fitzgeralds hotel-casino donated computer equipment recently to Meadows Fellowship Foursquare Church. "This equipment will enable our Children's Church to keep attendance records, birthdays, addresses, etc., our music ministry to log and retrieve weekly music selections," Pastor Ted Ramey said.

* STRIKE OUT HUNGER -- The Weekend Emergency Assistance Program is hosting its seventh Bowl-a-Thon to help "Strike Out Hunger." Help them by bowling at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Fe Bowling Center. The funds raised during the bowl-a-thon will help feed the 21,000 individuals who come to the center every year requesting assistance with emergency food and infant needs on the weekend.

* AMERICAN HEART WALK -- The noncompetitive 5K event to raise funds for research and community education programs to fight cardiovascular disease and stroke will be 8 a.m. Oct. 5 at two sites, Lorenzi Park in Las Vegas and the Galleria at Sunset mall in Henderson. * WALK FOR THE CURE -- The 12th annual Juvenile Diabetes Foundation benefit will be Sept. 28 at the MGM Grand. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the 10K walk at 7. Participants will follow the trail around the MGM Grand Adventure Theme Park. All participants raising $50 will receive a "Walk for the Cure" T-shirt. All those raising $100 will receive a pass for one admission to the theme park More than $180,000 was raised for JDF by the Las Vegas chapter last year. For a sponsor form, call 732-4795.

* KNPR ARTWORKS -- Non-profit organizations can earn money through a cooperative venture with KNPR 89.5-FM, Nevada Public Radio Corp., by selling tickets to KNPR's 15th annual Artworks, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28-29. The event features more than 100 artists, live entertainment, children's activities, food and beverages and a chance to win round-trip airline tickets to New York City donated by Prestige American Express Travel. Proceeds of the event benefit KNPR. Nonprofits selling tickets will receive 50 percent of the ticket price. Call 456-6695 for details.

Volunteers

* SAFE HOUSE TRAINING -- SAFE House will offer a professional volunteer training program for community members interested in volunteering for the domestic violence shelter and family strengthening nonprofit agency. A volunteer organization will be from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 25. Registration is required and training classes for crisis intervention hotline volunteers, nurturing program facilitators, and the SAFE House Communications Team will begin Oct. 3. * HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS -- The Nathan Adelson Hospice will begin its fall Volunteer Education Course on Saturday. Those interested in becoming patient-care hospice volunteers are provided with 36 hours of training which covers topics such as active listening skills, communication, death and dying, and emotional support. Once the initial training period is over, volunteers are asked to spend four to six hours a week working with hospice patients and families. Individuals interested in participating must have interview and orientation completed prior to Saturday. For more information, call Dee King, 733-0320.

* COUNSELORS NEEDED -- Community Action Against Rape needs volunteers. CAAR is Southern Nevada's only 24-hour sexual assault crisis intervention hotline. The course provides training on crisis counseling, hospital, law enforcement, court procedures, as well as state and county compensation. Pre-interview screening will be conducted through Friday. Training will be from Oct. 2-21 at CAAR, 749 Veteran's Memorial Drive. There is no cost for volunteers donating 12 hours per week for a six-month period.
