Claims of HIV fail to close three legal brothels in Ely

John Reese told the Ely City Council that since pre-employment HIV screening began at Nevada's brothels, 25 women have tested positive.

Stephanie Pleasants, owner of the Stardust Ranch, said she had never had an applicant test positive in Ely, although some were turned away after testing positive for venereal disease.

Councilman Bruce Alitt asked if women applying at Ely brothels were tested in Ely for HIV and was told they were, the Ely Daily Times reported.

He added that he understood that they could not go to work if they were HIV positive and was told that, too, was correct.

"That takes care of Ely," he said. "We're concerned about this part of the world."
