Retired Public Works boss Monahan dies

George C. Monahan, retired Clark County Public Works director who served six terms on the Henderson Planning Commission, has died at age 81.

He died Tuesday in his Henderson home after a long illness.

A native Nevadan and a 50-year-resident of Southern Nevada, Monahan was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Aurora.

A former Clark County surveyor, Monahan devoted much of his life to civic planning and public works.

In 1977, Monahan was chosen Man of the Year and Public Administrator of the Year by the American Public Works Association for his many years of service as director of the county Public Works department.

He was also former chairman of the Regional Streets and Highway Commission.

A former president of the American Public Works Association, Monahan was also a former member of the state Water Board, former member of the Henderson Real Estate Board and a former member of Nevada Register of Professional Engineers.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Monahan of Henderson; daughter, Mary George of Henderson; two sons, Greg Monahan of Henderson and Darryl Monahan of Reno, and a sister, Kathryn Sheehy of Yerington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 204 S. Boulder Highway in Henderson.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial will be at Palm Mortuary following the funeral service.
