Red Rock project will help improve trails, habitat

Monday, Sept. 9, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

The federal Bureau of Land Management is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Sept. 28 by inviting volunteers to participate in one of three Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area projects.

Volunteers are invited to help on National Public Lands Day to improve trails and habitat in Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas and in Ely, where cross-country ski trails will be expanded.

"Managing the public lands is a big job; fortunately, help is never very far behind," said BLM Director Michael Dombeck, who cleared trails at Red Rock during National Public Lands Day in 1994.

The day offers the public a chance to pitch in and protect its natural treasures, Dombeck said.

Those willing to donate materials for the projects are asked to call the BLM at 647-5000 for registration. Volunteers will meet at the Red Rock Visitors Center at 7 a.m. on Sept. 28 for assignments and tools. The BLM will provide lunch and refreshments after field work.
