Municipal judges in close battle
Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
Although Las Vegas Municipal Judge Tony Abbatangelo was expected to waltz to an easy win over attorney Brian Morrison in the special election for Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Department 3, the race was a toss-up Tuesday night.
Morrison, 41, actually led by 2 percent when the first votes were tallied, but Abbatangelo took a slim 4 percent lead by the time half the votes were counted.
Morrison had only a few street placards while Abbatangelo blanketed the district with A-frame signs and a series of saucy radio ads that featured a simple jingle that is an unusual approach in a judicial race.
The election for the Justice Court seat will be the only race decided in Tuesday's voting because it was a special election to fill a seat vacated early this year by embattled Justice of the Peace Daniel Ahlstrom.
Ahlstrom resigned as part of a federal plea bargain over his purchase of stolen saguaro cactuses from Arizona.
The rest of the races will have to wait until Nov. 5 for the ultimate victors.
