Genoa Store May Host Post Office

Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Barry Penzel, co-owner of the store, confirmed an official looked at the store on Tuesday but said a response isn't expected until next week at the earliest.

"We're at the stage where we're real hopeful," Penzel said. "They did look at the store and assess it, but it's premature to be happy, and premature to be sad."

The Postal Service in March announced plans to put in a new office at Genoa Lane and Pioneer Trail, just east of the town limits, but residents opposed that plan and came up with alternatives.

The Postal Service dropped the site in August, saying an environmental assessment showed there were wetlands on the lot. Critics had said from the start that part of the property was a bog due to artesian springs.

Residents also say they want the post office to remain in town, and disagreed with the Postal Service's earlier contention that Genoa's available downtown sites don't appear to be suitable.
