Editorial: The SUN’s picks for commission

Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

THE following are the SUN's recommendations for County Commission:

Incumbent Bruce Woodbury is being challenged by Lee Wayne Haynes in the District A race. Woodbury has been a responsive public official with a strong interest in responding to growth problems, especially traffic planning. He has done a terrific job and there is no reason to replace him. The SUN endorses Woodbury.

Mary Kincaid, a veteran North Las Vegas councilwoman, is running against Gary Davis, a former Municipal Court judge, for the District B seat. Kincaid, a longtime public servant with extensive knowledge of the issues, has done a great deal for her constituents and is a class act. Kincaid is the clear choice.

Three-term incumbent Paul Christensen is locked in a tough fight with challenger Lance Malone for the District C seat. Christensen says this will be his last term in office, if elected. Malone, a police officer, is a competent candidate. For people looking to make a change, Malone presents a viable alternative. Christensen's outspoken, brusque manner has made him enemies, but his valuable experience in dealing with urgent problems facing the county -- particularly on important water issues -- and dedication to the public earn him the SUN endorsement.

Incumbent Yvonne Atkinson Gates is being challenged by Earl Swift for the District D seat in what should be a runaway race for Gates. She has served the voters well and has been a hard-working public servant. Her accomplishments include redevelopment projects in West Las Vegas and obtaining grants for child-care centers. Voters should re-elect Gates.
