Elliott and Schrader in LVMS field
Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
Elliott, a 40-race winner on the Winston Cup circuit and 10-time winner of NASCAR's Most Popular Driver award, was assigned to the No. 4 Team ASE Racing Ford. It will mark Elliott's truck racing debut as a driver, although he does participate as a team owner. Ron Barfield Jr., will drive Elliott's truck, the No. 94 Super 8 Motel/McDonald's Ford, in Sunday's race.
Schrader has been hired by Darrell Waltrip to drive the No. 17 Sears Diehard Chevrolet. He replaces Bill Sedgwick, whose contract for next year will not be renewed. Waltrip will drive the No. 5 Diehard truck Sunday.
In another development, Felix "The Nighthawk" Giles, bidding to become the first Afro-American to qualify for a Craftsman Truck event, withdrew Tuesday due to a contractual snafu.
A Craftsman Truck record 70 entries will attempt to qualify for 40 starting spots in the $791,714 nationally televised (CBS) season finale.
