Columnist Susan Foyt: Nevada Dance Theatre Guild to kick off holiday season

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

WITH THE CRISP temperatures of recent days and the sense of rushing time as the holidays approach, the Nevada Dance Theatre Guild has provided a wondrous beginning to the season ahead.

The Nutcracker Holiday Market, a fantasy of Christmas shopping, will run Saturday through Monday in the Riviera Hotel's Convention Hall. Gift items, precious ornaments, gourmet treats and more will be offered.

The $5 admission to the market may be purchased at the door. There will be continuous entertainment and refreshments available for purchase. A portion of all sales will benefit Nevada Dance Theatre.

In conjunction with the Nutcracker Holiday Market, a "Black Tie and Sneaker Gala" will be held on Friday night, with dinner, drinks, early-bird shopping and a scavenger hunt; on Sunday, "Clara and the Mouse King Tea Party and Fashion Show" for children and adults will be offered; and an elegant "Neiman Marcus Fashion Show and Luncheon" will be Monday with Elaine Wynn as mistress of ceremonies.

Reservations (732-1638) required for each special event.

Macy's fashions

Year in and year out, the women who serve in the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary keep this worthy organization among the most effective charitable organizations in Southern Nevada.

On Monday, the Auxiliary will present a luncheon and Fall and Holiday Fashion Show by Macy's. Guests and members will gather at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Center, 2900 Palomino Lane.

A donation of $13 per person is requested, with tickets and reservations available by calling 870-4430. Information about the Salvation Army's holiday efforts will be announced, as will membership details.

Civic Symphony

Opening their 25th anniversary season on Sunday will be conductor Alan Lewis and members of the Las Vegas Civic Symphony. The free event, part of the cultural offerings provided to Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Department of Parks and Leisure Activities, will be at 2 p.m. in the Reed Whipple Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

A classical program is planned, with this special concert dedicated to founding Musical Director William Gromko.

Gromko, a graduate of Juilliard School of Music and Columbia University, has been a professional musician in Las Vegas since 1960 and has performed with symphonies across the nation and in Europe. He was also founder of the UNLV String Chamber Orchestra and served as its conductor for 12 years.

Admission is free to the Sunday concert, but tickets are required to guarantee seating. Call 229-6211 for more information.

Re Melanie

My recent story concerning the Electronic Media Awards and its sponsor, Women in Communication, unfortunately contained an error. Keeping the lengthy awards program lively was Melanie, star and well-recognized voice of KSNE 106.5-FM's "Melanie in the Morning." Melanie, with her lively wit and charm, did a splendid job with co-host Dave Courvoisier.
