In fact, Van Sickle said he will resign immediately if elected.
Van Sickle tried to pull out of the race before the September primary, but was told it was too late to remove his name from the ballot.
When he filed for the seat, Van Sickle said he had many ideas on how to assist local volunteer firefighters and the community.
But he changed his mind about public office after attending a spiritual forum with Christian men. He said his commitment to family comes first.
"If it came down to an evening fire board meeting ... and it was being held the same night as a dance recital or other activity my children are involved in, I wouldn't be there," Van Sickle said. "Therefore I couldn't be depended on."
He is urging residents to elect his opponent, Chuck Ayars.
