UNLV junior defensive back James Humes has been dismissed from the football team for violation of team and athletic department rules.
The former Western High star had appeared in six games and had eight tackles. He had attended Dixie College and Brigham Young before enrolling at UNLV last spring. He never played at BYU, having been dismissed from the team for violating that school's student code of conduct.
Humes did not accompany the team to Provo for the Oct. 12 game with BYU because of a coach's decision by Jeff Horton. However, he was on the trip to Hawaii last weekend, played against the Rainbow Warriors and registered one tackle.
Athletic Director Charles Cavagnaro would not specify what Humes did to be dismissed from the team. His only comment Tuesday was that Humes did not adhere to team and department policy.
"We received notification after we returned from Hawaii," Cavagnaro said. "It was a clear violation of our departmental policy."
Cavagnaro said Humes will remain on scholarship for the remainder of the fall semester. However, his scholarship will be reviewed at the end of the semester in mid-December.

UNLV golfers lose by one shot
The No. 1-ranked UNLV golf team made up two shots on leader Oklahoma State but had to settle for second place Tuesday in the Jerry Pate Invitational at Birmingham, Ala. The Rebels shot a one-over-par 289 in the final round, but the Cowboys held on for the win with their three-over 291. Southern Cal, Florida and North Carolina finished 3-4-5 in the 12-team tournament. UNLV had two players finish in the top 10, with Gilberto Morales (72-71-71--214) tying for fifth place and Bill Lunde (68-75-72--215) tying for ninth. UNLV's Ted Oh tied for 12th, Mike Ruiz was 14th and Jeremy Anderson tied for 35th.
Spurs' Robinson out
The San Antonio Spurs will start the season without star center David Robinson. The perennial All-Star will be out of the Spurs lineup up to a month because of a strained lower back. The NBA season opens Nov. 1. If Robinson is sidelined four weeks of regular-season play, he would miss the Spurs' first 10 games. He'll be replaced by Will Perdue.
Robertson on probation
A San Antonio jury sentenced former NBA All-Star Alvin Robertson to 10 years' probation and fined him $10,000 for the burglary of his ex-girlfriend's apartment. Robertson, 34, who played five seasons with the Spurs and last season with the Toronto Raptors, could have faced up to 20 years in prison for the felony conviction.
Interleague play on ropes
Baseball will abandon its attempt to start interleague play next season unless a new labor deal is in place by Nov. 15, acting commissioner Bud Selig said. Union head Donald Fehr and management negotiator Randy Levine are scheduled to resume talks today in Atlanta. While owners approved interleague play in January, Fehr said players won't agree unless it's part of an overall labor deal. That has stopped baseball from issuing next season's schedule, which usually is given to clubs in July. Baseball officials have prepared two schedules for next season, one with interleague play and one without.

Chang defeated Todd Woodbridge of, Australia, 6-3, 6-2; the Netherlands' Krajicek stopped Arnaud Boetsch of France, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; and Miamian Courier overcame Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. In a first-round upset, Armenian qualifier Sargis Sargsian beat Australian Mark Philippoussis 7-5, 6-3.
In another tennis tournament:

Tomba injured
World and Olympic ski champion Alberto Tomba fell in a training run in Italy, bruising his left knee and spraining his right wrist. Tomba, 29, was examined by doctors in his hometown of Bologna, and the skier's father, Franco Tomba, said his son didn't have any broken bones or knee ligament damage, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. He should be back on the slopes in a month.
