Peter Benton: Players Island a desert gem
Wednesday, Oct. 23, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
FOR YEARS I have repeatedly heard the expression: "There are some very good reasons to visit Mesquite."
With last week's opening of the new Players Island Golf Club, there are 18 more valid reasons to visit the oasis in the desert.
The par-72 layout, designed by noted architect Cal Olson, is a gem. There are five teeing areas for each hole, which can alter the course from a comfortable 5,200 yards to a 7,011-yard challenge for the more experienced.
Friday's official opening (which preceded a two-day, high-rollers event) featured a four-man scramble tournament for local media, politicos, and personalities.
Each and every participant was treated magnificently, which bodes well for future visitors.
From Duke Rohlffs, vice president and director of golf operations, to head pro Putter Hahn, to Lorre Hammond and her golf shop crew, to the lads in the bag and cart rooms -- everyone made sure no stone was left unturned to ensure all players were made to feel welcome, comfortable and special.
Winning the opening-day tournament with a 12-under-par 60 was Rick Rockwood's team of Gary Esplin, Mike Allen and Bob Wotcock, while Kriss Keough, Larry O'Brien and Mike Nobell took second in this competitive event with 61.
Three teams shared third spot with 62s. They were: Todd Peterson, Denny Mayes, Charley Johnson and Pat Walker; Ray Jones, Ryan Olson and Doug Wise; and Brent Herrin, Fred Edgar, Keith Rigsby and Dr. Herrin.
Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Earl Greene on the fourth hole, Bryce Frehmer on the eighth, Fred Edgar on the 14th and Ryan Olson on the 16th.
Jason Wight won the long-drive competition, while Todd Peterson took longest putt.
Some golfers, after having lost a ball, will drop another in the vicinity where they think the ball is lost and add a penalty stroke.
However, when a ball is lost, the player MUST go back and hit again from the point where he last played a shot, incurring a one-stroke penalty. In other words, if you lose your drive, you must return to the tee and are hitting three.
