Letter: Get rid of outdated and ineffective coroner’s inquest

Wednesday, Oct. 23, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

It was arrogant police power displayed in all its ugliness. At one point, I counted 29 Metro officers in the courtroom. I must say, I certainly felt safe. Is there really such a shortage of policemen or is it simply a matter of ineffective leadership along with an inappropriate use of manpower?

As a 30-year resident, I feel compelled to offer my apologies to the distraught family. Many people share their grief. After all, I, as a taxpayer and voter, must accept some of the responsibility for such community problems as police misconduct, not only in a financial way but morally as well. Metro officers appeared to be enjoying the outdated, grim process known as the coroner's inquest, where roses die and tears dry. It is long overdue that we as citizens give the coroner's inquest a decent burial.
