Supreme Court rejects petition by LV murderer

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected, without comment, the petition of Las Vegas killer Michael Ray Hogan, sentenced to death for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend in 1984.

Hogan was convicted of shooting blackjack dealer Heidi Hinkley to death. He was also convicted of attempted murder in the wounding of her 12-year-old daughter, who was shot five times while she tried to telephone for help.

In his latest appeal, Hogan asked the U.S. Supreme Court to rule whether it was proper that Nevada Supreme Court Justice Bob Rose declined to vote on Hogan's petition for a re-hearing. The other four Nevada Supreme Court justices voted against the rehearing.

Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said the U.S. Supreme Court was correct in refusing to hear the appeal, which she called "meritless." Hogan, however, has another appeal pending in U.S. District Court.

"With his many petitions, Hogan has done everything he can to move the focus away from his own heinous crimes," Del Papa said.

Hogan was also convicted of manslaughter in Iowa in 1971 in the killing of another girlfriend.
