Peter Benton: Brady Exber coasts to Las Vegas CC title
Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
THE LAS VEGAS Country Club's 1996 championships were contested recently, and, as is the norm in these events, there were not only upsets but some rather surprisingly one-sided victories.
In the men's championship flight, well-known Brady Exber, a winner of numerous Southern Nevada Golf Association tournaments, posted a convincing 7-6 win over the popular Coe Power.
Good friends Don Dombrowski and Frank Nielsen battled it out in the final of the first flight with Dombrowski prevailing 2-up.
Andy Blumen, not playing too frequently of late, had a tense battle with adversary Ken Land, before taking the second flight 2 and 1.
The third flight victor was ageless Warren Peterson, who defeated Andy Fonfa 4 and 2.
Dennis Sabbath and Frank Zybura had a battle royal in the fourth flight, Sabbath prevailing 2 and 1. The tenacious Jerry Kring won the fifth flight 4 and 2 over 2 over Sam Lionel.
Howard Ickes captured the sixth flight with a 6 and 5 victory over Sam Pick.
The close encounter expected in the women's club championship never came to pass. Defending champion Rhonda Mushkin, an experienced match-play competitor, won 3 and 2 over worthy opponent Kaz Pratt.
Betsey Bell defeated Nancy Ashworth 5 and 4 in the Patty Sheehan flight, while Wallin eked out a narrow win in the Betsy King flight. She defeated the happy-go-lucky Linda Jablon 1-up.
The effervescent Diane Jett had a lopsided 8 and 7 victory over Audrey Lattin in the Dinah Shore flight.
In the men's consolation shootout, Murt Strimling and Brad Wallin shared the honors, with Bob Farmer taking third place.
Barbara Greenspun was the ladies shootout victor, followed by Mary Wiedman and Velma Fernandez.
Bruce Aplin, longtime head professional for Scotty Greer out at Painted Desert, has been beset with horrendous medical expenses due to illness.
In an effort to assist this popular fellow, the always-caring Greer has arranged a benefit tournament scheduled for Oct. 27. The entrance fee is $75.
